Moderating Effects of Religiosity on the Relationship between Depression and Suicidal Ideation of Older People

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the moderating effects of Religiosity(organizational, private, and subjective religiosity) on the relations between depression and suicidal ideation of older people. Data were collected from a cross-sectional survey of 319 older adults(age¡Ã60) drawn from senior centers, churches, and senior welfare centers in and around Seoul. The statistical significance was tested by SPSS 18.0. The results were as follows£º1) The average point from a 5-point-scale for suicidal ideation was 1.59(SD=.75). 2) Examining suicidal ideation in accordance with demographic characteristics, it showed statistically significant difference in educational background, health status, occupation status. 3) Depression had a strong impact on suicidal ideation of older people. 4) Subjective religiosity was negatively related with suicidal ideation of the elderly. 5) The effect of depression on suicidal ideation of older people was modified by private religiosity. These results suggest crucial practical implications. The implications and limitations of these findings are discussed.
